Volunteering at The Positive Place

The Positive Place depends on the skills and energy of its volunteers.  There are always exciting volunteering opportunities on offer for people from all backgrounds.  You don't need to be HIV positive to be a Positive Place volunteer, but the volunteering opportunities marked * are only suitable for registered service users.

All volunteers work closely with paid staff, and all travel, meal and reasonable childcare expenses are paid by The Positive Place.  As a volunteer you will be eligible to attend many of the workshops and courses on offer. Evelyn, the Outreach Mentoring Coordinator provides training, support and supervision for volunteers.  All of which can assist you if you are interested in volunteering in order to develop your professional skills and/or find paid work in an HIV or related field.

Whatever your reasons for volunteering, The Positive Place offers a warm, supportive and friendly environment in which to give your time.  We recognize that many people who volunteer have a number of other commitments, like work, family and education, so you can volunteer with us much and as often as suits you.

Full training and induction is provided for all volunteering roles.

Reception and Group Support

Help the peer group sessions run smoothly by minding the reception desk, offering tea and coffee, showing people around the space, making sure service users are comfortable and informed on any activities taking place, and assisting in organising and facilitating social and learning events.

Mentoring and Peer Enabling

If you are HIV+ and would like to support other positive people in accessing The Positive Place's services, why not become a mentor?  The role involves introducing new users to the groups you most often attend, and ensuring that they are provided with the support they need to make best use of the sessions.  Peer enabling is another way to contribute, through helping to organise social events, being a lead participant in workshops and facilitated discussions, and acting as a liaison between service users and staff to ensure that ideas and suggestions from the groups are carried forward.

Volunteer Complementary Therapy Scheme

Newly qualified complementary therapists often need to keep up their skills while building a client base, and offering your time to The Positive Place's service users enables HIV+ people to access essential stress management and living well therapies when they decide they need them.  We offer fully equipped treatment rooms, some of which are available to see private clients in exchange for the gift of your time.

Information Volunteers

Our leaflets, booklets, magazines and reference library need constant updating and day-to-day organization.  Volunteers are needed to help maintain all The Positive Place's information stores.

Interpreter

As a volunteer you will be providing support to the African Access Worker in clinical, community and social settings to act as an interpreter. This could also include translating written material.
